Mo Poetic, the willing vessel with visions...

Monette Miles, or "Mo Poetic", as she is also known, was definitely born with a gift for oratory and has a unique gift to motivate a group of any age. Since 1998, she's been honored and humbled to serve in her community by providing enrichment spoken word and culturally related assemblies for several school districts, community centers, faith-based and nonprofit organizations. While listening to the voice of students that related to the assemblies, she furthered her poetic quest by expanding the components and curriculum to address the hunger for creative writing and The Let's Write Out Loud Program, an English/language arts enrichment program, based on the California State Standards, was developed by her to help kids fall in love with words.

Monette served as the Youth Organizer for the award winning Young Visionaries Youth Academy's Pistols to Pencils Program in San Bernardino, CA. The Pistols 2 Pencils Program funded by the California Endowment, advocated against the issues of gun and gang violence and utilized the basic principles of The Let's Write Out Loud Program to fall in love with words. The Pistols 2 Pencils youth used their voices to educate them on their rights on policies and laws that affect them and trained them to organize and to create campaigns to lobby for institutional and community changes that are of importance to them. The Pistols 2 Pencils youth group improved their abilities to communicate more clearly and concisely in written media, to increased awareness, engage students, parents, and school administrators by creating a monthly online newsletter that discussed strategies to reduce and prevent youth violence on campuses the surrounding communities and lead a first of its kind, youth lead town hall meeting. The Pistols 2 Pencils Program also created several "Watch Us Die or Help Us Live" PSA's with the support of Mayor Patrick Morris of San Bernardino, members of Parents of Murdered Children—Inland Empire Chapter, San Bernardino County District Attorney Michael A. Ramos, San Bernardino Police Chief Keith Kilmer, San Bernardino County Assistant Superintendent of Schools Margaret Hill, as well as several gang involved youth to gain their perspectives on the issues of youth gang and gun violence. The Pistols 2 Pencils Program also circulated a petition to declare April as National Teen Violence Awareness Month collecting over 300 signatures and raising for the aforementioned cause.

Monette has also served as the lead organizer for the Imani Café, a youth intervention program of Imani Temple Christian Fellowship in Pomona, CA, under the leadership of Bishop Jelani F. Kafela for 5 years reaching over 500 plus youth. While serving the community through the Imani Café, Imani received a grant from the African American Tobacco Education Network (AATEN) and hosted hip-hop summits that included the support from 100.3 KDAY radio station, the City of Pomona mayor's office, the Los Angeles County Registrar's Office and The American Cancer Society. She also served as the lead community Outreach Coordinator for Man Talk, a project that was lead by the Imani Economic and Community Corporation and funded by The California Endowment to empower African American men with materials on prostate cancer prevention.

Monette has self-published two poetry booklets titled A Collaboration of Poetry w/Attitude, Poems 4 The Soul Vol. 1 and The Essence of A Woman, Poems 4 The Soul Vol. 11 and is mentioned in a book titled Walk'in the Talk: Keepin' the Faith in Africentric Congregations by Dr. Julia M. Speller.

She is the Creative Director and founder of Homestreet Publishing, a desktop publishing organization that strives to bring the community together by providing enrichment programs and internships that support English/language arts, education, community awareness and unity. Homestreet Publishing was nominated for an outstanding community organization award by The Rialto Alliance of Black School Educators (RABSE) in 2009 and she's an Ordained Evangelist at Imani Temple Christian Fellowship, Pomona, CA 91766, under the leadership of Bishop Jelani & Lady Kathy Kafela, www.imanitcf.org

Currently she proudly serves in Riverside, CA as the Peer to Peer Coordinator for A Cup of Happy Program at Operation SafeHouse. A Cup of Happy offers prevention efforts prior to a diagnosis for mental illness, supportive counseling and mental health services, formal and informal outreach, peer lead discussion groups, resources and referrals that promote emotional wellness for youth and young adults 16-25. www.facebook.com/shstwest
