@Cerberus957 Well, not really, the German greeting has a different-sounding 'ü'. When a German or Austrian says, "Grüss Gott", it sounds to the American ear as if he's saying "Great Scott!". In the song it sounds like 'oo" - to me at least. Also, Grüss doesn't fit the conteext of the song. Yo...

Beneath the rustic exterior, Carl was an artist with a fine knowledge of chord structure and harmony. An excellent composition and could still be a hit for someone.

Best cover of this song I've heard that wasn't a straight imitation. A little too short, though; an instrumental break would have been a nice addition.

Everyone seems to have his/her idea of which version was the 'original'. The original was in fact by Australian rocker Johnny O'Keefe; however, his arrangement was quite lame compared with the most of the various cover versions.
