About The Tight-Wad Gamer
I am The Tight-Wad Gamer. My philosophy is to play games that have been out for awhile, generally two years or so. The advantages are:
* I do not pay the HUGE premiums that cutting-edge hardware and software demand. In general, either the hardware is ahead of the software or the software is ahead of the hardware. Time affords me the opportunity to strike the right balance between the two and save money. I bought a used corporate HP DC7600 around the beginning of last year for $150, slapped in an OEM GT8800 with a clean XPP build and it plays Crysis just fine on high settings. Sure I do not have DX10 or better, but I am not making payments on it.....and my next used machine will. So Crysis will seem fresh again, just like FarCry became to me when I first got this machine.
* I know what is broke and how to fix it. All the patches you are ever going to get are available by then, hardware and software.
* I know what games are good and will stand the test of time. Believe it or not, I still love to play Age of Empires (Conquerors). Eye candy is nice, but the terms of the game itself are important and it must have replay value.
* I have vast online resources readily available for new ideas and add-ons. But I am adamant about not using walkthroughs or strategy guides until I have thoroughly enjoyed the game myself. Doing so would be like unwrapping your Christmas present before Halloween.
I just consider myself in a past time warp, like playing the stock market with a newspaper a couple of years in the future! Get it, pastime? :-)
Right now I am playing around with FarCry in an experimental effort to make the best high visual quality YouTube game videos I can. IMHO, the original FarCry is one of the best FPS games ever made. You do not need amazing reflexes to play it well, just use your head!
Since most people do not have big monitors and FarCry is not a high definition motion picture, I am using fullscreen 720P. The playback requires a lot less bandwidth/load time than 1080P and I can record them at 1024x768 native for best 960x720P conversion quality.
