If F9 doesn't work, press F2 at startup to get into BIOS, go to "boot" and make sure "Boot Booster" is DISABLED.
I thought the people I got this netbook from must have deleted the recovery partition, but an ehow article mentioned this setting and saved my a**!

@daAppaholic It's basically standby--a state where the NC uses virtually no power, but can still wake quickly. CM7 prior to 7.1 (which is available in a stable release as of yesterday) would slowly bleed power while the device was not in use.

If you already have ROM Manager on your NC, you can skip making the card, download the stock zip (not sure about the old one in this video, see my comment below for a current one) to your NC, move it to /sdcard with your file manager, then in ROM Manager "Install ROM from SD Card."

This video is exactly what I needed! Picked up a used N1E as a gift to someone who won't have a PC or WiFi (or know how to use them), and the stock library was not going to cut it with a 2000 epub library. Off to root! I'm using newer hardware and the 1.7 firmware, so wish me luck.
