For the record, it was 4 something in the afternoon when I recorded this, ergo the beer was not for breakfast. I got it on the way home from work, thanks for asking.
This song originally appeared on Kimya Dawson's 2004 album "My Cute Fiend Princess", and I do not own that album, but I would be ordering myself a copy right now if I had a credit card, but I don't.
Who is Kimya Dawson? A couple of her songs were on the "Juno" soundtrack, so if you've seen that, you've heard some of her stuff. She was also in the Moldy Peaches with Adam Green.
If Ms. Dawson asks me to take this down, I will. Her version is better than mine, at any rate.

#banninghistory Sasha Grey reads Luis Valdez's "Zoot Suit & Other Plays" in response to the Tuscon school board's decision to ban books! Stand up, use your voice & support this website: http://banninghis...

Dear Friend, Last week, the Tucson school board outraged the nation when they cancelled its high schools' Mexican American Studies program and forcibly banned a series of books dealing with race. The reason? Apparently teaching respect for other cultures amounts to "racial hatred" and is in violation of Arizona's statewide ban against ethnic studies - passed in conjunction with SB1070.
Since the news broke, the school board has been catching heat and there is a chance they'll allow the books back in the classroom, but they need to know the we're watching. With Latino students in Tucson making up more than half of the student population - educators, parents, and students are fighting back. Can you sign this petition to Superintendent John Pedicone and the school board to reverse the decision to ban the books and reinstate the Mexican American Studies program? I just signed myself.

Arizona has been ground zero for attacks against immigrant and Latino families, creating a hateful environment where it's acceptable to attack Latino youth in a place where they need affirmation - their classrooms.
Tucson's Mexican American Studies program gave Latino students a sense of dignity and connection to their own history and other students were offered an insight to a community that is a huge part of the local culture but all too often demonized.
Students in Arizona are fighting to keep these programs in spite of the wave of anti-immigrant hysteria in the state and now they need our help in keeping up the fight.
Can you sign this petition to Tucson Superintendent John Pedicone and the school board to reverse the decision reinstate the Mexican American Studies class?

Thanks!

This song has been a personal favorite of mine since 1998 or 1999, I guess. It's the last track, number nine, on John Cougar's "American Fool" album (Riva Records 1982). I bought the cd (which I still have) in the Fayetteville Hastings my freshman year at the University of Arkansas.
And yes, the original version is much better than my version. FYI, I have seen "American Fool" in Walmart on the discount rack, and if you have seven bucks to spare, you should pick it up. "American Fool" also features the hit songs "Hurts So Good", "Jack & Diane", and "Hand To Hold On To".
In case you didn't know, "John Cougar" is "John Cougar Mellencamp" is "John Mellencamp". I'm not a huge fan of his, but I am a huge fan of this particular album. And for the record, this is the only album by him I own, so maybe if I listened to more of his stuff, I'd be a bigger fan.
No, I do not have permission to play this song. If Mr. Mellencamp asks me to take it down, I will. But before he does, I would ask him to first consider that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, that I am not making any money off of this, and that there is a possibility (however slim) that my performance of his song might inspire somebody out there to pick up "American Fool" at their local Walmart or their local record store.
It's free advertising, Mr. Mellencamp. Have a heart.
