OK, this sounds like the soundtrack of a Hollywood blockbuster. But is it actually SUPPOSED to sound so chaotic?

Dass die aus der Frauenkirche zu Weihnachten im Fernsehen so eine lumpige Besetzung und geschlunzte Aufführung anbieten … Intonation, Zusammenspiel etc. ist ja alles nur so halb. Naja, macht ja nix. Die Kirche ist sowieso halb leer.

Hideous, breathless playing, esp. the last movt!

Like gustavyeung was saying: her voice bears personality. True enough. But her real charisma lies in her stage presence. (Watch her stunning Klytaemnestra!) Devoid of her acting however, I find her voice lacks warmth and evenness. Top notes sound risky and altogether, dare I say, a little acid …

Very old fashioned, of course, but I clearly prefer this wealth of sound to the often consumptive "baroque-style" performances.

The last mvt is VERY fast, in fact I find it a little frantic. But it sounds brilliant.

And, holtlynx and ColinMcGraw, Bach was, of course, a Lutheran like most people in Saxony in Bach's time.

That playing is so unspeakably terrible in every respect, and the echo in that hall is so large that it is impossible to say anything about the instrument. It SOUNDS hair raising anyway!!! I am having ear cancer now!!

The solo violin player is trying alright. What annoys me are her illogical fingerings and bowings, and her uncontrolled vibrato. Listen to Schwarzkopf/Szell's rendering with Edith Peinemann playing the violin!

This really is sensationally beautiful, full of warmth and love and grief.

Above all qualities, Ludwig of course excells herself in the lyrical low register passages, where she makes us believe that she is truly bidding painful farewell to her heroic husband and her godly father …
