This is the new music video of Jacob Favela's "Forgiven," with Jacob performing his song.
This is the new music video of Jacob Favela's "Forgiven," with Jacob performing his song. The choreography is by Meosha Adams. In it Jacob tells the story of his mom's sordid life and the results it had on her family. In the end he forgives her.
Forgiven is the first film from the Children's Music Project at the Hill Country Youth Ranch. It was directed and produced by Tony Gallucci (Milk River Film).
The Ranch is a family-oriented facility housing disenfranchised, abandoned and abused children. They are wards of the state of Texas. The Children's Music Project is one of several fine arts programs at the Ranch that seek to discover, encourage and accommodate the artistic talents of these children. With a state of the art recording studio, theatre and fine arts center, the Ranch is immersed in providing kids the opportunity to expand their horizons in ways that may lead to future vocations and careers.
Typically, children at the Ranch write poetry, which is then taken by professional songwriters and musicians and recorded in an effort to spread the words of the child and the story of their lives.
The project is now working on its third CD of songs featuring such luminaries as Dana Cooper, Stephen Bruton, Monte Montgomery, Sara Hickman, Tommy Spurlock, Jamie Oldaker and Flaco Jimenez.
This video represents two firsts for the Ranch -- the first public release of a song both written and performed by the child, and the first attempt at a music video of such a song.
We hope you enjoy this production.
[UPDATE: Since the production of this video, it has made the rounds of social service agencies and folks invested in the future of abused children. Because of this Jacob was invited to a leadership conference in Wasington D.C. where he saw George Bush speak and met with Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama; he has spoken to another national leadership conference in Denver; met Elton John, Lance Armstrong and Andy Roddick at a function where he was honored as the CPS Youth of the Year for Texas. He was the subject of FoxNews-Houston's Thanksgiving 2007 feature story which utilized much of this video in the presentation and is being nominated for an Emmy. You can see it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3syIBivbmSk]
The Ranch and its fine arts programs are supported largely by private donations. If you would like to contribute to the cause, you can check out the website at http://www.youth-ranch.org, or mail them at P.O. Box 67, Ingram Texas 78025.

Joe Ely and band performing Butch Hancock's "Boxcars" on the steps of the Texas State Capi
Joe Ely and band performing Butch Hancock's "Boxcars" on the steps of the Texas State Capitol as a featured presentation of the Texas Book Festival. He shared a set with Johnny Bush (videos coming soon) and Lavelle White (who i missed). Joe also spoke at the festival about his new book "Bonfire of Roadmaps".
One of the most enduring memories i have of my own days on the road is sitting with Lyle watching Joe perform at the Kerrville Folk Festival as a huge thunderstorm rolled in from behind the stage. Joe just kept on wailing, seeming to gain power as the lightning crashed all around us. Impossible to describe the electricity of the moment (every pun intended), the whole scenario is seared in my being. Joe will always be that most charismatic of performers, but that night for me makes him legendary.

Poet-Novelist-Filmmaker (and personal favorite writer) Sherman Alexie was a featured guest
Poet-Novelist-Filmmaker (and personal favorite writer) Sherman Alexie was a featured guest at the Texas Book Festival in Austin, speaking at the Texas State Capitol and, as shown here, participating in a Young Adult novelists' panel at Alamo Drafthouse-Lamar on November 3, 2007. He reads a snippet from his new book "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" and then answers a few questions at the end. The panel included eight writers (i'll post clips of some of the others over time). At one point he appears to be flippant, but it's a false impression -- the questions were being randomly drawn from a fishbowl, and the questioner had no choice about who or what to ask (a perfectly odd format). In any case i thought Sherman handled it with great humor and poise, and made the situation evolve into a funny and astute answer.
Also on the panel were Jacques Couvillon, Cynthia Leitich Smith, Adrienne Kress, Perry Moore, April Lurie, Neil Shusterman and Brian Yansky. The hosts were Barbara Chisholm and Rosalind Faires.
Check out Sherman's site at http://www.fallsapart.com/
Note that the new book he reads from here has just been nominated for a National Book Award!
UPDATE: Alexie WON the National Book Award for this book. Congrats Sherman!
Many, many thanks to Sherman for posting a link to this video on the homepage of his website. Esokapi!
Alexie is also the writer and director of three acclaimed films -- Smoke Signals (the first film made and produced by an all Native American cast and crew), The Business of Fancydancing (a highly underrated and overlooked film in my opinion) and 49.

This film was taken the first night i ever saw these guys. I was at RedRum to film someone else for a documentary i was making, and these guys opened. They blew me sideways. Besides searing me with their all original words, they knew exactly what buttons to push to keep the crowd pumpin' through their whole set. Lead KNEC is mesmerizing. In short, the whole lot was electric. And, as i might have thought, they've become well used on the Austin hip-hop club circuit, and played some notable spots (like La Zona Rosa, Antone's, SXSW and Flamingo Cantina). It's been my intention to interview them for another film (they've agreed once upon a time), but thus far my killer schedule has prevented me from getting back to Austin on a night they're playing to sit down with them. So, rather than wait too much longer i felt like this needed to be out there, at least as historical document of what these guys were doing two years ago.
What you're watching here is a melange of several songs. I had gone with enough tape for my main purpose, but couldn't not film these guys, so i got a few snippets, including part of their hit Czechoslovakia.
Vehicular at RedRum, Austin, Texas, 4 August 2005
Those of you who visit my MySpace page know that i've had Vehicular or KNEC playing on there since day one. You can trace those back to their pages to find out when and where they're playing.

The Carolyn Wonderland Group -- Come Together

Here is Carolyn's Press Bio: Carolyn Wonderland has the goods. A triple threat with her diverse songwriting, soulful vocals, and guitar goddess status - all featured on over twenty CDs, six of which are her releases - she has a pedigree in this business that's hard to match. A bit of a renegade, she likes to incorporate elements of Blues, Country, Swing, Zydeco, Surf, Gospel, Soul, and some nights, maybe even a Cumbia into the musical mix. Recent years have seen her stretching out musically working some expert whistling and scat singing into her shows. In addition to her trusty guitar, "Patty," Carolyn has been regularly playing her trumpet, and even occasionally the accordion, mandolin, or keys...she is threatening to take up nose flute if someone doesn't stop her...
Wonderland's songs have been featured on NBC's "Homicide," Fox's "Time of Your Life," & Houston NORML even made a video PSA set to Carolyn's "Annie's Scarlet Letter." She has toured with acts like Buddy Guy and Johnny Winter, sat-in with String Cheese Incident, Robert Earl Keen, and Los Lobos, and even sang the "National Anthem" at Sturgis Bike Week 2003 -- her 10th anniversary playing Sturgis -- before Robbie Kneivel's record-breaking jump over one hundred Harleys. Recently, she was a panelist at the University of Texas LBJ Library's "Instruments of Freedom" Forum with Kinky Friedman, Marcia Ball, Jerry Jeff Walker and others. She's been lucky enough to jam with mentors and friends like Bob Dylan, Eddy Shaver and Ray Benson. She's co-written songs with Cindy Cashdollar, Candye Kane, Sarah Brown and Guy Forsyth.
How lucky can one girl get? Well, with a lot of hard work, just this lucky. In her words, "I still get to play most every night, so the adventure continues. Every musical interlude is a new page, another chance to jump into the Ether." Originally from Houston, a city where she has won awards in The Houston Press for everything from Best Guitarist, Vocalist, Songwriter, Blues, to Release of the Year and Musician of the Year -- virtually sweeping the awards for 5 years from the time she was a teenager. Now residing in Austin, Ms. Wonderland says, "I moved to the land of free guitar lessons!"
In addition to leading her band, Carolyn is also in a few other notable groups. She's the primary singer on the Jerry Lightfoot's Band of Wonder "Texistentialism" CD with Jerry and Vince Welnick (Grateful Dead, Tubes.) She's a founding member of the Loose Affiliation of Saints and Sinners (with Papa Mali, Eldridge Goins, Guy Forsyth, and others), with several of her songs being featured on their "Sessions from the Hotel San Jose Rm. 50" CD. Carolyn is also the guitarist in the all-girl, southern rock band Sis DeVille, and a founding member of the Austin Volunteer Orchestra. When she's not playing music or driving around the country, she volunteers for the non-profit charity, Instruments for Orphans, serving on the board of directors. Frequently, you can also catch her doing Gospel Brunch at Maria's Taco X-Press with the Imperial Golden Crown Harmonizers on Sundays, raising money for local charities.
Her first love is her band, and with good reason. Years of touring are evident in both the maturity of the songs and the tightness of the grooves on 2003's "Bloodless Revolution." Not one to rest on her laurels, Carolyn is back in the studio working with Ray Benson on lucky CD number 7. You can preview some of the new songs at one of the many live shows on her perpetual tour.
THE BAND OF UNUSUAL SUSPECTS • Scott Daniels - guitar, vocals, mandolin • Cole El Saleh - keyboards • Eldridge Goins - drums • Bobby Perkins - bass
The event is put on monthly by Dr. Kathleen Hudson, executive director of the Texas Heritage Music Foundation of Kerrville, Texas, and is hosted by student Prairie Flower. In addition to The Carolyn Wonderland Group, other performers on March 7th included Melissa Weatherly, Emily Lively & Greg Wall, and Sol Patch.
Check out the Texas Heritage Music Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the great variety of Texas music, and encouraging education and scholarship. In addition to the Coffeehouse Series, the foundation puts on an annual Texas Living History Day, celebrates the birthday of the Father of Country Music, Jimmie Rodgers, and provides a scholarship for a promising student musician to attend college.

Guitar-slinging prodigy Will Owen-Gage rides a great blues solo in a song that i failed to get completely on film and don't know now what it was. Helping him out are his mentor, smokin' Texas legend Jay Boy Adams, the incomparable Flaco Jimenez, and unflappable bassist Ronnie Leatherman (nee Thirteenth Floor Elevators) at the Bluebonnet Blues Festival on a hot spring afternoon in Texas. There was another guitarist on acoustic rhythm and a drummer whose names i don't know -- sorry. I believe Owen-Gage was 17 at the time.

Terri and Lloyd wrote this song called I Found the Lions on her CD. They are performing here for Women's History Month at the Schreiner University Coffeehouse Series in the Cailloux Center at Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas. The series, originated by music historian and author Dr. Kathleen Hudson, and sponsored by the Texas Heritage Music Foundation presents six concerts annually in an intimate setting and is free for students and community members.
Terri is a top shelf songwriter, beloved in Austin and the greater Texas music kingdom for her sly look at the mix between country and city life, and her wonderfully positive outlook. Grammy-winner Lloyd is a legendary steel, slide, dobro and guitar player with a history that includes all the great Lubbock and Austin musicians. These days he is also known as the father of Dixie Chicks lead singer Natalie Maines.
Be sure to hook up with these folks online at their various incarnations:
