About Me:
History...
Sydney born Mick Raven has been performing acoustically for a number of years. Back in 1996 he put together the Soundwaves Songwriters which helped revive the Manly Fishermans club, the Brookvale Hotel, the Time and Tide Hotel in Dee Why and the President Hotel in Belrose to name a few. Artists such as iOTA, Skulker, Troy Kemp,Cass Eager, Queen B and 30 other performers strutted their stuff at the Soundwaves Songwriters between 1996 -- 97. These Venues went on to book original artists with the Manly Fishermans club still supporting original music.
Before going solo, Mick performed in Sydney's Northern Beaches Band the Treasure Tree, which recorded on four Northern Beaches Compilation CDs 'Sensory Deprivation', 'Blind, Naked and Helpless','Perfection is Boring' and the 'Rockafellas X-mas Edition' before recording their first CD 'Spinoff' in 1999. After they recorded their 2nd CD 'Runes' in 2002 (Never released) the band split and Mick went back to his first passion the acoustic guitar. Having penned over 500 songs he was keen to get as much recorded and released as was humanly possible.
Back in the late eighties Mick recorded on a compilation record called 'Australia's Newest Bands' which was produced by Lonnie Lee (Australian singer from the 60's who had a number one hit in 1960 'Starlight Starbright') he then landed a job as a entertainment consultant with Australian Variety Artists (a division of the Harbour Agency) and learn't the art of booking as well as performing live.
His relatives all hail from the Northern Beaches of Sydney, one grandfather was vice president back in the 1930's of the Dee Why lifesaving club (Lal Turner) while the other (Jack Banfield) performed on the Manly Ferry as a violinist back in the 1950's.
Mick Raven's band on his first 2004 CD 'Arctic' (recorded live at Ninetysixk studios,Sydney) consisted of Dobro and slide guitarist Steve Gildea from Canada and local Mark Thomas on percussion and Djembe.
Mick recorded again in 2006 at Ninetysixk studios. Collaboration with Engineer and musician Nick Aronsten and long time friend Bongo (iota) on Bass guitar plus the return of Mark Thomas on percussion and Djembe has produced a CD that he is very proud of.
Mick Raven's Vocal/Guitar style has influences from the Middle East ,Native American and traditional Folk, Blues and Roots Music. He has been playing the Guitar for 30 odd years and also plays an Egyptian Oud as well.
He has recorded on many recordings over the years and recently released his 2nd solo CD 'Tribal Spirit' Having also finished recording with 'Francis Edwards/Vietnam Veterans Soul Choir' for the 'Angels Beyond the Abyss' Double CD out now in ABC stores.
Mick has been involved with the annual Northern Beaches Folk Festival and has performed every year at the festival since 2003. He has also performed at the Sydney Multicultral Festival 2009 and 2010 events.
