Europa im neunten Jahrhundert. In Ingelheim am Rhein wächst Johanna (Johanna Wokalek), die Tochter des fanatischen Dorfpriesters auf. Gegen den Willen des Vaters lernt sie heimlich Lesen und Schreiben. Doch Johannas außergewöhnliches Talent bleibt nicht unentdeckt. Als einziges Mädchen darf sie die Domschule in Dorstadt besuchen und wird in die Obhut des Ritters Gerold (David Wenham) gegeben, in den sie sich unsterblich verliebt.
Nach einem blutigen Überfall der Normannen, trifft Johanna eine folgenreiche Entscheidung. Als Mann verkleidet, tritt sie ins Kloster Fulda ein. Dort erlernt sie die Kunst des Heilens und wird zum Priester geweiht. Später in Rom erwirbt sie den Ruf eines Wunderheilers und wird aufgrund ihrer Fähigkeiten zum Leibarzt von Papst Sergius (John Goodman) ernannt. Kurz darauf wird der Papst vergiftet aufgefunden. Der Drahtzieher des Komplotts, Bischof Anastasius (Anatole Taubman), macht sich Hoffnungen auf den Heiligen Stuhl, doch überraschend wird Johanna zum Papst gewählt. Aber die unentdeckte "Päpstin" besitzt eine gefährliche Schwachstelle: Sie ist von Gerold, ihrem heimlichen Geliebten, schwanger...

Laurent Garnier will release his first 12'' single in five years through A Berlin-based imprint Innervisions.
It's a two-tracker called the Back To My Roots EP, featuring the title track and a b-side called PANORAMIX.
PANORAMIX is a tribute to the night of February 29. Laurent Garnier was playing in Panorama Bar (Berghain) in Berlin, maybe the best club in Europe.
Says Laurent: 'During that time I played the demo mix of the Back To My Roots track, which I'd made that week. Dixon jumped on me to ask what it was. He said that he loved the sound of it and asked me what I wanted to do with it, mentioning that he would really like to release it on Innervisions.
'I went back home on the Monday and worked straight away on another track, which I named Panoramix, a tribute to that night at Panorama. I sent a very rough demo to Dixon via download and received a text five minutes later saying that he wanted it. It happened really fast without me having any plans at all.'
