@qwertyfshag You're right, it is a blessing. "Making kiddush" or "saying kiddush" refer to the same action of reciting a blessing over wine. Patrick is referring to a very common time when people make kiddush; as part of the rituals at the start of (Friday night) Shabbat dinner.
