About this user
I was born into a musical family where my mom and dad sang in church, my dad also played the acoustic guitar and had a band called the BB Brothers. Although my dad was willing to teach me, I was reluctant to learn - I mean I was 7.
At the age of 10, I joined the junior choir in church and then I broke away from it when I entered secondary school at the age of 11. This is when I met Hervin Hood. I was mainly interested in dancehall music at the time, but I enjoyed hip-hop, although it wasn't "my thing" at the time. That was until Hervin gave me a Busta Rhymes album to listen to and I heard how the Caribbean flavor could be meshed with the hip-hop style and that sparked my interest.
Following this, I started listening to Notorious BIG, Common, The Roots and some other rappers, just to get a style that could suit me, but it wasn't working so I developed my own style and found that I was attracted to lyrical compositions that allowed for the story telling style, more than any other genre.
I started writing and working on music passionately from the age of 14, I joined a couple website forums which helped me build my knowledge base on music and which assisted me my work on music structure. I started recording on a tape deck while Hervin was beat boxing, then we moved from that to a computer microphone and sound recorder with the music playing in the background. We then advanced to getting proper software, namely Cool Edit Pro and some instrumentals.
By the age of 16, we were performing songs at small shows that we had written. I entered college at the age of 17 where I met more people who were interested in Hip Hop and who were also recording their music. There were also in different groups, so Hervin and I rounded up the best of the best and started rolling with them. These artistes included people like KremShaw, Coxilus, Dog Brain and Dwain John.
We named ourselves AhPawKahLypse Productions, a name, which was later, dropped in favour of SKAW Records. At that time, we were a force to be reckoned with. My style was different. I couldn't freestyle, so whenever a freestyle cipher was going on I would stick in the background and think of two punch lines, join in, lay it out and have the crowd going. That's how I got the name "Klepto," 'cause I stole the spotlight every time I joined the cypher.
Music is my life, I feel a beat every where I go... I listen to all types of music and I never limit myself to listening based on style/genre. I get ideas and concepts from them all. Peace.
