Life, simple, complex, the meaning can be nothing, but the functions to live, many, yet natural, and can all be destroyed, with a swing of sword, or pull of trigger, or swinging of fist, and all ignored, for a small picture, blood, dirt, hate, fellowship, what could come of it all.
It was dark thought, and moments had caused it, and the ringing of the words ceased to stop. Dirt, derby, men, showered down, nothing that struck me was green, only red and brown. Bullets burst from location behind a hedge row, inflicting another casualty before a burst from the turret .50 cal stopped the hell.
The salvos had been spastic, only momentarily and random, but had caught 3 privates in the hell, and had lessened the patrol by 1/5, a rifle squad of 12 and an engineer team of 3 that tagged along with the m18 sense the beaches of Utah sector. Pulling himself from the half full drain ditch, he glanced at the 2 other crew members that had leaped to the same cover.
The rifles had dove around the halftracks and the engineers had jumped for a further section of the ditch, the tank, halftracks and jeep here untouched, and lucky the strike had ripped a hole through the hedge row. Pulling himself up on the chasse of the tank, he heaved up the driver and loader. The task force had halted at a crossroads, so the course for the flank attack on a low ridge the airborne had fail to take could be accomplished by the platoon.
His platoon, no company had not seen any action on the beaches, and his crew had seen action in north Africa in an m3 Stuart, but that had been a year or more ago. He slid through the metal ring, and navigated around the loader to the firing position. The engine, sputter then lurched left, towards the gap. The halftracks would have slight trouble, but the force would need to push on to encircle and flank the ridge. The sad little scar on the map, though an advantage to the enemy, what opinion on the lump, over mere ownership.
