Why is it so sad? a 1997 m3 came out in 1996 as a 1997 model. The 2003 maxima came out at the end of 2002, thats almost a 7 year difference? it makes no sense comparing cars the way you do. Now a base 3 series in the U.S has the same amount of hp and more torque than a m3 from 1997
