I live on a small one-block street in Washington, D.C. in a neighborhood with lots of greenery and parks. I can be found most evenings walking in the park with my Golden Retriever, Athena.

It is glorious and uplifting to contemplate the passing of the seasons, the sounds of Carolina Wrens and woodpeckers. the fall of leaves and their rejuvenation in the springtime.

Occasionally I catch sight of white-tailed deer roaming this neighborhood, and on a very dark night, I have seen the red fox stealing into the woods. These are the unsupressable natural beings who inhabit this neighborhood that I, too, call home.

I am a distance runner and compete each Fall in the Army Ten Miler. At my age I don't run for time but just for the aesthetics of it. I am the father of a daughter and two sons and the grandfather of one grandson. I work for an environmental organization.

I enjoy sharing writing that is honest, expressive and derives from the heart and the experience of the writer.

I am interested in the history of my ancestors and family members. The Dickinson family was half English and half Irish through marriage into the Houlihan family in Manchester, England in the mid 19th Century. David Dickinson, my earliest recorded ancestor, was a warehouseman born in Liverpool, England.

The Dickinsons were textile workers who migrated to Fall River, Massachusetts about 1883. During that period, Fall River and surrounding areas of Massachusetts made up the world's largest textile-producing region.

I find pretense, arrogance, phoniness and putting on airs to be utterly dull and boring.

I like the sound of late August cicadas.

I find the return of the light on late winter mornings to be one of the most exciting phenomena of the universe and life--and very positive.

Perhaps the light is who we are. Certainly it resonates deeply with our own postiive imaginings and identity: Dominus illuminatio mea.

I like to hear the wind speak through the branches; notice changing colors of the eastern sky just before dawn.
