Eventhough Maurice G. Garland is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after and respected writers in the world, he didn't originally intend on being one. In fact, it wasn't until his junior year at Fort Valley State University when his advisor told him he had to take a few writing classes to graduate that he fully realized he had a penchant for the pen. Until then, his primary focus had been serving as program director of the colleges popular radio station 100.5 FM. Using his natural leadership ability, Garland took the radio station to new heights during his tenure from 1998-2003, helping it grow from an AM frequency to FM and winning several awards including Most Community Involved Station of the Year. Meanwhile, he was perfecting his newfound affinity for writing at the college newspaper, the Peachite where he served as sports and music editor from 2001-2003. Born in Pittsburg but reared in Atlanta, music in particular played an instrumental role in his life. Largely influenced by the records that his father played, Garland fell fast and hard for the syrupy R&B sounds of artists like Sade the bip of jazz artists like Grover Washington, Jr. and the unapologetic messages of Hip Hop artists like KRS-ONE. His diverse musical taste would eventually aid him in his stint on college radio and later as one of the most important writers on the Southern Hip Hop music scene. Upon graduation from Fort Valley in 2003, Garland returned to Atlantas popular rap station, HOT 107.9, where he had spent two summers interning in the promotions department. However, the station wasn't hiring and upon hearing about an opening at a national weekly lifestyle newspaper, Rolling Out Urbanstyle Weekly, Garland decided to try his hand at writing fulltime. His first day at the paper would be a precursor to his entire experience at the publication--hectic but exciting. Though he hardly knew his superiors and didn't have a real understanding about what his responsibilities as a staff writer would be, he was forced to spend his first day on the job covering a convention in Cleveland. Never one to falter under pressure, Garland quickly adapted to the situation and not much later found himself the go-to writer on staff, covering everything from the Source Awards to the Trumpet Awards. It wasn't long before he began freelancing for popular print and online publications like SOHH.com and Allhiphop.com; XXL, Upscale, Juice Magazine (based in Germany) and Vibe. Over the years he's interviewed notable figures including Serena and Venus Williams, Earl Graves and Outkast for numerous outlets. Using his easy charm and quick wit to forge relationships with editors and writers throughout the country, Garland has become an excellent resource for media wishing to cover the southern music scene in particular. His keen insight, sharp perception and thorough investigative skills haven't gone unnoticed, and in addition to writing feature and cover stories for several publications, he's become a valuable pop culture source for notable media outlets like the Boston Globe and MTV. After leaving Rolling Out in 2006, Garland spent a year as music editor at Ozone Magazine where he was responsible for editing, writing and conceptualizing content. He continues to freelance and has completed artist bios for major labels including Virgin, J, Atlantic and Jive Records. He also recently founded his own marketing and promotions company, Agapecean, with his younger brother, Chris. In April 2006 his alma mater, Fort Valley State University, awarded him with a Young Alumni Ambassadors award for his professional accomplishments, community service efforts and mentoring of students in FVSU's Mass Communications department. Garland is also breaking into the lecture/public speaking circuit having spoke at FVSU, North Atlanta High School, Chapel Hill Middle School and Stone Mountain Middle School.
