About this user
BIOGRAPHYMatteo is an eclectic musician and composer. He went through all kinds of styles and instruments before going to New York, where he finally put all of his experiences together and started writing his striking and original music (Ron Sadoff, Composer,NYU director of film scoring.)
Matteo moved to New York in 2008 to pursue his masters degree in Jazz performance at New York University. He has been the first Italian musician ever to be accepted in this prestigious program.
He had the honor of studying and playing with great musicians such as Jean-Michel Pilc, Stefon Harris, Peter Bernstein , Ralph Alessi, Wayne Krantz, and many others.
Thanks to his broad knowledge and sensitivity, Matteo can shape his ideas according to the instrumentation he wants to use and the mood he wants to create, switching from avant-garde to jazz, from post-indie to unconventional anti-folk tunes (which he regularly performs at the famed Bitter End.) He is also skilled in using guitar effect processors that allow him to create unconventional sounds and to expand the compositional and improvisational possibilities. He also studies and performs electronic music.
Matteo has several projects with whom he regularly performs in renowned New York venues:
Concepts Duo
His first US record release is called Concepts (2009, New World Jazz Record Label), a duo album with the bass player Jerry DeVore. (www.conceptsproject.com)
The Cd contains 4 of Matteoʼs compositions and 3 standards. The way of thinking about the Duo is radically different from the typical guitar-bass jazz recording. Rhythm, harmony, melody, classical influences, free and traditional forms, all come together in a striking version of what these two instruments can express together. The way they approach standards is very unconventional, with the same flavor and mood of the originals. Matteoʼs playing swings between jazz and a contemporary classical music approach.
Concepts Trio
Combo that swings between experimental jazz and avant-garde music.
They are preparing the recording of the new CD that will feature 10 of Matteoʼs
compositions with several guest artists.
Ashen Figure
An experimental indie band. He wrote all the music for the band.
They are now working on their first CD, Tiled Room (preview available on the website.) Itʼs hard to define what kind of music it is, being influenced by many genres; classical, jazz, rock, electronic, experimental.
Before moving to New York he attended the Rodi Garganico Conservatory, where he studied classical guitar under Maestro Marco Salcito. He graduated in 2005 with maximum marks. During these years he attended a number of courses (Alirio Diaz,Paolo Giordano, Paolo Chierici, Gene Bertoncini).
In 2003 he set up the guitar duo Dodici Corde with Vincenzo Aniello. The two gave concerts during 2004-2007 and were warmly received by critics and the public. In 2004 they recorded Days 4 Brazil, a CD of contemporary Brazilian music on which they interpreted works by Brazilian composers, such as Bellinati, Gnattali, Assad, Gismonti.
During these years in the conservatory, He won several award with his guitar duo:
1st prize, Concorso Nazionale di Musica B.Barattelli in Popoli (PE), (2005)
1st prize, Concorso Nazionale di Musica Capitanata in Apricena (FG), (2005)
2nd prize, San Giovanni Rotondo Guitar Competition (2005)
3rd prize, Teramo international chamber music competition (2005)
Besides these interests, Matteo has always been a folk-popular music lover.
He plays the 5 string banjo with the Abruzzo Country Brothers, successful small combo that has taken part in countless country and bluegrass festivals in Italy. He also plays the acoustic guitar (He studied with Paolo Giordano), bouzouki and mandolin in ethnic music groups (Italian Popular band among others) which has helped him to further his understanding of Eastern European and Mediterranean music as well as American and Irish music.
He also studied philosophy at the university of lʼAquila, Italy.
