Tá certo, kra... você está confundindo as fatorações. Veja:

(a - b)² = a² - 2ab + b²

(a + b).(a - b) = a² - b²

O erro está quando ele divide por 0.

Em uma passagem ele divide os dois lados por (a - b), só que como a = b -> (a - b) = 0.

E não existe divisão por 0.
