The ARENA with Master Po heard on XM Satellite Radio (11/17/2007)

Opie and Anthony listeners were first introduced to Master Po when the duo returned to radio after a two year hiatus. Little was known about him other than O&A had an obvious respect for his abilities and the few appearances he made on the show really never gave him a chance to delve into his thoughts on martial arts and its benefits.

On the weekends, Opie and Anthony allow their friends to have their own radio shows during a timeslot called the Weekend Virus and this was Master Po's foray into the broadcasting world. It was a shame that there was only one show as it had a lot of potential. The forum of having his own show made Master Po seem more relaxed than he sometimes was portrayed on the Opie and Anthony show and gives him a chance to showcase his sense of humor.

Master Po and his first guest, Sensei Richard Lenchus, discuss their reasons for studying martial arts. For example, Sensei Lenchus endured savage treatment and anti-semitism as a child and Master Po endured a particularly senseless beating when he was only four. After listening to them, you get the feeling these men didn't learn martial arts to intimidate or harm others; they learn it for the discipline and control that this brings them.

Master Po's next guest was Grand Master Aaron Banks. Banks, like Lenchus, is a legend in the martial arts world. Master Banks has many controversial opinions on everything from mixed-martial arts (he hates it and feels it is a bastard form of martial arts) to Jackie Chan (he claims he's a fraud). Both Sensei Lenchus and Master Banks share a particularly interesting anecdotes about the legendary and controversial Count Dante.

Master Po's final guest was Lyte Burly. Mr. Burly was there to discuss 52 Blocks; a defensive martial arts style that apparently originated in the prison system. This style is not necessarily a well-known fighting style and it was good that Master Po included it as brought exposure to a wider audience as the story behind it is fascinating.

The rapport between the three masters makes for compelling radio. Sensei Lenchus has a great sense of humor ... as one would expect from a 'Coney Island Sensei'. Master Banks seemed to hold nothing back and no topic was off limits.

The masters all have their different styles and it is reflected in the show. For example, I particularly enjoyed when Master Po discussed how one should find peace, discipline, and purposely avoid confrontation unless it was an inevitability only to have Master Banks advocate simply laying out a potential threat.

Also, the three masters also discuss the meaning behind the word 'Ush' that Master Po had popularized on Opie and Anthony's show. If you, like me, were not familiar with the word's origin and meaning you'll enjoy it.

While I wondered if a radio show dedicated to martial arts would produce a good listening experience, I can now say it did. Master Po's underlying message was one of positivity and hopefully he'll get a chance to do this again somewhere else.
