The Chaos emeralds arrived on Marios world well after that time (since SMBZ has only been going on for about four years), so the real mystery is how it got down into the minus world in the first place. Kolorado and Goombella were both already trapped within the Minus world before the emerald even arrived, so they must have encountered it shortly after it arrived down there.
