Mortgage rates need to go up. The excess building you cite was brought on by artifically low rates. Getting rid of Freddie/Fannie (mortgage/housing subsidies) is a good thing as it will allow market forces to finally put a bottom in the oversupplied market.

@MrNChoudhury I agree. The crisis would still have occured because there was a housing/credit bubble that was destined to implode. If independant traders ran the world the crisis would not have been stopped but the systemic failure/collapse issue would likely be off of the table.
