About The Mary Rose 500 Appeal
Mary Rose 500: recruiting the new crew is the public fundraising campaign being launched by the Mary Rose Trust, which has already raised £10 million towards a £14 million target, to contribute to the full £35 million cost of the new museum project. The Heritage Lottery Fund has confirmed an award of £21 million which meets the rest of the cost. The Mary Rose 500 appeal is looking for 500 individuals, schools, businesses, organisations, clubs, societies, colleges, to come on board and symbolically become the new crew of the Mary Rose, each pledging to raise £500 and become a part of the Mary Rose history. To join the new crew visit www.maryrose500.org
The importance of 500 to the Mary Rose the original crew numbered some 500 and it is the 500th anniversary this year of Henry VIII coming to the throne and of his commissioning of the Mary Rose. With funding secure, the new museum will also open in time to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the start of the ships operational life (2012).

The Mary Rose is the only 16th century warship on display anywhere in the world. Launched in 1511, she was one of the first ships able to fire a broadside, and was a favourite of King Henry VIII.After a long and successful career, she sank during an engagement with a French fleet in 1545. Her rediscovery and raising were seminal events in the history of maritime archaeology.
At present the Mary Rose is housed in a temporary ship hall, with the amazing artefacts discovered with her on display in a separate dedicated Mary Rose Museum. Both are sited in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
The new Mary Rose Museum will, for the first time since her sinking, re-unite the ship and her contents, fully preserved and presented in a context that portrays a time capsule of Tudor life at sea.
