Shaykh Muhammad Abdur Rahman Madani is a Bangladeshi Muslim scholar, public speaker and preacher. He is best known in the British Muslim community for his popular Channel S program, Islam Essentials, where he offers clear and convincing answers to live questions posed by viewers from around the Europe. He is a teacher and principal by profession and also an Imam and Khatib at a mosque in East London. He is a graduate of Islamic University of Madinah in Arabic Language & Islamic Studies.
BIRTH AND FAMILY
Shaykh Abdur Rahman Madani was born on January 10, 1971 in Dakra, a small village in Bagerhat district, Khulna, Bangladesh. He was born to Mr Muhammad Abul Hossain and Mrs Rokeya Begum. Shaykh Madani is the 2nd eldest of his five brothers and one sister.
In 1996, the Shaykh was married to Mrs Nusrat Fatima, a Kamil graduate from Dhaka. They now live in London and are blessed with three beautiful children: Rafa Rahman, Yahya Ahmad and baby Marwah Rahman.
EDUCATION
The academic life of Shyakh Madani is one that of amazement, unique and inspiring. He was 1st and never second in all of his public examinations. It all begun at the Dakra Primary School, where he gained scholarship in Year 5. His secondary education was shared between Bagerhat Alia Madrasah and later Tamirul Millat Marasah, Dhaka. He continued his education at Tamirul Millat Kamil Madrasah and completed Dhakil (1985), Alim (1987), Fazil (1989) and Kamil (1991), in all of which he came 1st in combined merit list.
He graduated in BA (Hons) Arabic Language & Islamic Studies (1994) from the Islamic University of Madinah, Saudi Arabia, achieving distinction with 93% marks. Later he completed MA Arabic (1995) and MPhil Arabic (1999) from Dhaka University, achieving 1st class in both. Recently he completed PGCE (2008) from Goldsmiths, University of London. Shaykh Madani is continuing his extraordinary academic life in purse of PhD.
CAREER
The Shaykh began his career as a teacher at Tamirul Millat Kamil Madrasah (19951999), the same institution where he spent much of his own educational life. He held the position of a Tutor for CALF Programme, Open University, Bangladesh and Bangladesh Television. In 1999, he moved to International Islamic University, Chittagong (19992002) as a Lecturer in Dawah & Islamic Studies.
His career soon flourished and his tremendous ability was further recognised in 2002, when a London-based Islamic school and college went to Bangladesh in a search for a vice-principal. He applied for the post and was short-listed. After attending numerous of assessments and interviews, the Shaykh was chosen as the successful candidate to be the Vice Principal of Jamiatul Ummah and held the post until 2004.
He has worked tirelessly for the success of the school, which now tops the League Table for London Borough of Tower Hamlets. In September 2004 he became the principal of Jamiatul Ummah Secondary School and Sixth Form College and remains in this post.
Since his arrived to the UK on 16th April 2002, Shaykh Madani has been serving as the Khatib of Darul Ummah Mosque, London. His multi-lingual (Arabic, English and Bengali) Khutba and the use of simple language, attracts worshipers of all ages from various parts of London.
COMMUNITY WORK
Being a full-time teacher, principal and Khatib does not hinder the Shaykhs commitment to the community. His voluntary contribution at the weekly Islam Essentials is just one of such example. He founded Islam Essentials in 2004 along with Abu Sayed Ansarey as the presenter for the show. Since then, the programme has grown in popularity and today it attracts thousands of viewers from across the Europe. Shaykh Madani has become an icon and a celebrity figure for the British Bangladeshi community.
The Shaykh has toured many cities in the UK and Europe delivering lectures on Islam and other contemporary issues. He holds a weekly Tafsir-ul-Quran session at Darul Ummah Mosque every Saturdays from 7pm.
He is an Executive Members of Dawatul Islam UK & Eire, a community organisation that is actively engaged in spreading the word of Islam to people. He is also the founding chairman of Global Aid Trust (GAT), a newly established charity organisation.
