Songs like this didn't make too much sense to me at age 22 when they were new. Too slow, too melancholy, I wondered how a guy only a year or two older than me could be so serious. Then life happened, and they got better and better. They have now kept me company for decades in the finest way.

@amphoravideo Joni has been a chain smoker since at least the 1970's, its a miracle she is alive. That is why her singing deteriorated at a relatively young age (Tony Bennett, the other extreme, is 85 and can still hit the high notes). Without the smoking, she'd probably still sound really good.

@jaysewall1 Agree. Butterfield was the only one I ever saw that was so good, though I never saw Little Walter. Norton Buffalo was actually pretty close, but he never played much outside of Northern California, so most of you have never heard him, except on session with Bonnie Raitt.

@Gilnar13 Great answer. Of course this was in the days when the young and experimental people had the energy. America stood for that energy and supported it.. Now its a bunch of old right wingers who have anger and mostly, fear. What happened, I don't know.
