Today, R.E.M. broke up. I recall riding to high school as a freshman on a clear, crisp fall morning in a car driven by some junior or senior who happened to pick me up for some forgotten reason. He was playing Driver 8 on the tape deck. Every time the song ended, he would rewind and play it again...

The smile at 3:43 epitomizes this song. Just beautiful. Michael knows it. Everyone else in the band knows it. And we all know it too.

Early R.E.M. is arguably the best R.E.M. And this one is great.

My god, they are such babies here. This song - and Driver 8 - established REM's m.o. Rocking songs (Driver 8) and quiet, contemplative songs (this one or Find the River). Love it. Love it so much.

Listen to the background lyrics of the refrain: What is it up in the air for, if it's there for so long, it's over it's over me.... this is why R.E.M. was genius. Levels upon levels.

@MoveOverCasanova - the songs grow on you? No, I don't think so. They're either good songs or they're not. Syd's songs are not, in general, good songs. Anyone who argues otherwise is caught up in the myth, rather than the reality, of the man and his songs.
