Brian Oberlin is a singing multi-instrumentalist from Portland, Oregon. Although he spends much of his time teaching mandolin workshops and leading a three-piece western swing and bluegrass band (Ida Viper), he returns to the stage as a solo act to satisfy his passion for music and the challenge only a solo gig can offer. On stage, Brian delves into the music that has inspired him over the past 12 years of performing. While crooning an old Irving Berlin or George Gershwin song and swinging out the melody on his acoustic mandolin, he will switch gears and blast out a plethora of fast-paced lyrics to a swinging fiddle tune or hit the electric (slide) mandolin with a Stevie Wonder or Allman Brothers song and then onto an old piano rag or a Bach violin sonata. The same holds true for his instrumental and vocal prowess on the guitar and tenor banjo. Finally, Brian adds his originals that swing, stomp, waltz, and ease into his personal style. He has also spent five years with Northern Accent and five years with Grasshoppah. Grasshoppah won the 2001 Jammie Award for the best band in the Grand Rapids, MI area. Brian has performed with musical greats Rhonda Vincent, Larry Sparks and Vassar Clements. He was a 2003 finalist at the national mandolin championship in Winfield, Kansas.
