Make-Up Designory presents a 1950's makup tutorial inspired by Marilyn Monroe, the consummate 50s sex symbol. Marilyn Monroe transitioned us out of the era of black and white movies, into the future of color. Her makeup reflects that. MUD's Sean Conklin shows us how to get that iconic 1950s makeup look.
Sean begins with the face by selection a base, a shadow, a highlight, and a corrector. Base matching the foundation is essential. So rather than using the specific colors Sean uses on his model, make sure you use colors that are right for you client's skin. We did a whole video on base matching if you need a refresher: http://youtu.be/S4pQkKhDvFY
Sean uses the #940 Foundation Brush (http://shop.mudshop.com/940-foundation-synthetic-brush )to apply the highlight and the #930 Concealer Brush (http://shop.mudshop.com/930-corrector-synthetic-brush ) to knock out some unwanted shadows around the eyes.
Tip: When using Cream Highlights and Shadow, mix with the base to achieve one color that is two shades lighter and one that is two shades darker.
Sean sets the make-up with Shell Loose Powder (http://shop.mudshop.com/loose-powder ) and the #720 Powder Brush (http://shop.mudshop.com/powder-brush ). Use a stipple technique to prevent foundation removal.
Eyebrows in the color films of the 1950's were usually narrowed and well defined, leaving the face well framed. Sean uses the #210 Angle Brush (http://shop.mudshop.com/210-angle-liner-brush ) to shape the brows. To recreate Marilyn's look, make sure to add a point to the peak of the eyebrow, directly over the iris. Taper the outer corner of the brow to a fine point. Use the brow fix (http://shop.mudshop.com/brow-fix ) to control unruly hair and achieve a more polished look.

MUD's 1950's makup tutorial inspired by Marilyn Monroe continues here in part 2. (Watch part 1 first! http://youtu.be/vXyjfVPtK0U ).
Begin by applying Highlight to the brow bone with the #350 Shadow Blender Brush (http://shop.mudshop.com/350-shadow-blender-brush ).
Sean mixes the Bone and Ice eye colors by MakeUp Designory to create a beautiful demi-matte. (http://shop.mudshop.com/eye-color)
To add a soft dimension in the crease that is perfect for this classic 1950's makeup look, apply the Chamois Eye Color with Brush #300 (http://shop.mudshop.com/300-small-shadow-brush ).
To get Marilyn Monroe's classic "glamour eye" eye liner, use the Black Cake Eye Liner (http://shop.mudshop.com/cake-eyeliner ) and the #100 EyeLiner Brush (http://shop.mudshop.com/100-eyeliner-brush ).
Spray water onto a palette, and spin the brush in the water to shape the bristles into a fine point. Activate the Cake Liner with the wet brush, making sure to spin the brush as you do so. Use the point, lay and drag method from the inner corner of the eye to the center. Point, lay and drag the brush from the outer corner and meet the liner in the middle.
Apply a generous coat of Volumizing Mascara (http://shop.mudshop.com/mascara ) with the #500 Brush (http://shop.mudshop.com/500-mascara-synthetic-brush ) to thicken and darken the lashes before the false lash application.
To apply false lashes, measure the length of the lashes to the eye. http://shop.mudshop.com/s.nl/sc.2/cat...
Occasionally, the strips may need to be trimmed to fit the eye properly. Apply the adhesive to the strip and wait for the glue to become tacky -- about 20-30 seconds. Place the strips into the lash line, where the root of the lash meets the skin. Once the glue is dried, camouflage the adhesive with Cake Liner and Brush #100.
Red-infused colors were popular for lips in the 1950's. To get this look, line the lips with Brick Lip Pencil (http://shop.mudshop.com/brick-lip-pencil ).
Tip: Use a reference to apply a period lip, as each period (30s, 40, 50s, etc) has a distinctive shape.
Fill in the lips with the Rustic Lipstick (http://shop.mudshop.com/rustic ) the #310 Lip Brush (http://shop.mudshop.com/310-lip-brush ).
Set the lipstick with a tissue and apply Loose Powder with the #710 Powder Blush Brush (http://shop.mudshop.com/710-powder-blush-brush ). Separate the 2-ply tissue, rest one side on the lips, and lightly dust the powder.
For the final touch, complete the Marilyn Monroe makeup look with the Monroe mole. All it takes is one dot with the Black Eye Pencil (http://shop.mudshop.com/black-eye-pencil ) on the left side, just above the center of the nasal labial fold.

MUD's 1940s Vintage inspired Makeup Tutorial with Reiva Cruze continues. If you haven't watched Part 1, click here to start from the begining of the lesson (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgQW8hAqDjc ). We are going to start by brightening up the eyes. Bright eyes were popular in the 1940s.
Step 7 - Let's apply some hightlights starting with the brow bone. Using the Cream Eye Shadow and a #300S Brush, start under the brow as close to the edge as possible and blend down into the crease for a nice highlight that will contrast with the brow itself. Apply another hightligh, using the same color on the inner corner of the lid with a #800 Blending Brush (http://shop.mudshop.com/crease-brush ).
Step 8 - Aply Black Cake Eyeliner (http://shop.mudshop.com/cake-eyeliner ) and a slightly wet #100 Liner Brush, draw a thin subtle line along the upper lash line.
Step 9 - Use tweezers to apply individual false lashes one at a time, starting from the outter corer and woring back and forth between the two eyes to keep both lashes equal.
Step 10 - Once the lashes are dry, apply mascara with a #500 fan brush going from root to tip.
Step 11 - Cheeks in the 1940s were pinkist undertones, so here, Reiva uses Rose Petal and Glow Cheek Color (http://shop.mudshop.com/cheek-color ).
Step 12 - Complete the 1940s look with the Red Lip Pencil and the Ladybug Lipstick.
