The 24 vs 12 drawings per second ("ones" vs "twos") is a funny argument to me. Animating at 12 frames can actually give ones animation more snap. If there are camera moves or the character is working with love action, then 24 frames is a must, but it can also "mush out" one's animation.

In the Fantastic Worlds of Irwin Allen, there is footage of divers pushing the real flying sub through the water. It seemed like all it needed was a little shove and it glided nicely through the shot.
