Forgive my ignorance but is water from these softener devices potable or will it taste salty? Are they only meant for softening water for appliances?

The reason I am cladding in mdf is for a suitable background to hang pictures and the like. But I can't seem to find out if the mdf will neutralise the sound proof properties of the plasterboard/sheet rock. I just wondered if you knew the answer?

How will you stop the high pressure water shorting out the spark? Even if you used deionised water, you wouldn't be able to stop that kind of voltage breaking down the covalent bonds.

Very interesting, we do it a different way over this side of the pond. Never the less its good to see other methods.
