Maia Claire Garrison began her performance career as a child acrobat with The Big Apple Circus. Raised in the midst of two vibrant artist communities in both New York City and Rome, Italy, upon graduating from Sarah Lawrence College she toured extensively through out the United States, Europe, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean with the internationally acclaimed Urban Bush Women. Between '95-'01 she directed her own company "M'Zawa Danz" and in '08 established "DigDance".

Over the years her work has been presented at Aaron Davis Hall, Artscape 2000, Bennington College, Brooklyn Museum of Art, City College, The Children's Museum, Central Park Summer Stage, Celebrate Brooklyn, Connecticut College, Dance Place, Danspace Project, Dance Theater Workshop, Dance On The Square, Florida State University, Gawanus Arts Exchange, Jacob's Pillow, The Kitchen, The Knitting Factory, Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors, The Manhattan Mall, The Miller Theater, New Jersey City University, New Jersey Performing Arts Center, NYC Technical College, Playhouse 91, 651 Arts Brooklyn, Rutgers State University, Summer in the Square, SUNY Potsdam University, SOTA (Garth Fagan Dance/Rochester), St. Stephen's School of Rome, Symphony Space, Syracuse University, Wave Hill, World Trade Center Plaza and at the Young People's Performance Festival.

Daughter of celebrated Jazz bassist Jimmy Garrison long time member of The John Coltrane Quartet, and Rome-based choreographer Roberta Escamilla Garrison, she has collaborated significantly with her mother and siblings Joy Garrison (Jazz vocalist), and Matt Garrison (bassist/composer).

She has also been presented on various occasions by the Europe Jazz Network, in the Italian Festivals Jazzin'it (Vignola), Musicaingioco, Mister Jazz, (Ravenna), Reggio Emilia Jazz and Donne in Jazz (Bologna). She was also a featured choreographer in the Umbria Jazz Festival (Orvieto), Ai Confini Tra Sardinia e Jazz (Sardinia Jazz Network), Lucca Jazz Donna (Tuscany) and in the Fandango Jazz Festival at La Palma Jazz Club in Rome.

Awarded both a Choreographer's Fellowship and BUILD grant from the New York Foundation for the Arts and highlighted on the WB11 News and WABC's "New York Views" hosted by Roz Abrams, she is currently dance faculty at Sarah Lawrence College.
