About Me:

"Love is a lesson to learn in our time." --John Martyn

"The literacy required to live in civil society, the competence to participate in democratic communities, the ability to think critically and act deliberately in a pluralistic world, the empathy that permits us to hear and thus accommodate others, all involve skills that must be acquired. Excellence is the product of teaching and is liberty's measure." --Benjamin Barber, An Aristocracy of Everyone

"I firmly believe that we should not march into Baghdad... To occupy Iraq would instantly shatter our coalition, turning the whole Arab world against us, and make a broken tyrant into a latter-day Arab hero...assigning young soldiers to a fruitless hunt for a securely entrenched dictator and condemning them to fight in what would be an unwinnable urban guerrilla war. It could only plunge that part of the world into even greater instability." --Former President George H.W. Bush and Brent Scowcroft in their 1998 book, "A World Transformed"

"The truth is a snare: you cannot have it without being caught. You cannot have the truth in such a way that you catch it, but only in such a way that it catches you." --Søren Kierkegaard

"There may be times when we are powerless
to prevent injustice, but there must never
be a time when we fail to protest." --Elie Wiesel

"What kind of peace do we seek? Not a PAX Americana enforced on the world by American weapons of war. Not the peace of the grave or the security of the slave. I am talking about genuine peace, the kind of peace that makes life on earth worth living, the kind that enables men and nations to grow and to hope and to build a better life for their children - not merely peace for Americans but peace for all men and women - not merely peace in our time but peace for all time."
--John F. Kennedy (1963)

"Government does make mistakes. And I don't think the public demands infallibility from its government. I certainly don't. Accountability is what we demand. And we should have the tools that make it possible for us to compel the government to tell us what it's up to, how it's carrying out our business and to instruct the government to take corrective steps when mistakes are made." --Jane Kirtley, Professor of Media Ethics & Law, Univ of Minn

"At this stage of history, either one of two things is possible, either the general population will take control of its own destiny and will concern itself with community interests, guided by values of solidarity and sympathy and concern for others, or alternatively, there will no destiny for anyone to control." --Noam Chomsky

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed people can change the world: indeed it's the only thing that ever has." --Margaret Mead

"The public has a duty to watch its Government closely and keep it on the right track." --Lieutenant General Michael V. Hayden, USAF, Director, National Security Agency Address on October 19, 2000

"Behind closed doors, there is no guarantee that the most basic of individual freedoms will be preserved. And as we enter the 21st Century, the great fear we have for our democracy is the enveloping culture of government secrecy and the corresponding distrust of government that follows." --Senators Daniel Patrick Moynihan and Rob Wyden, U.S. Senate Report, "Secrecy in International and Domestic Policy Making: The Case for More Sunshine," October 2000

hey, The Little Yellow Ukuleles did have a youtube, but that was when they were just new, and not that great. So people weren't very nice about them. But they are pretty good now, might try and convince them to make a new one ! :) How have you heard of them?

I still believe there are more thinking, rational, conscientious people here than not. We just don't always make as much noise about it.
