There are several tutorials here demonstrating brush coils which is ideal for your hair length. It would reduce spacey parts and it only takes about 5 mins to do. I do it on my son with just shea butter and it looks really cute!

I've found that picking my hair out with a BIG pick (very similar to finger detangling) on dry hair prior to shampooing is much easier than doing it in the shower. I have transitioning hair and it rips out if combed when wet.
