@FPGAPete Perhaps you can have a FET across the main timing capacitor with the gate attached to the 2 duplicate outputs, such that when it falls on the duplicate, it will discharge the capacitor and start a new "die rolling" cycle. So long as the timing isn't too precise, you should end up with ...

The cathode is the element that lights up, and it is a cold cathode because it doesn't need a heater to operate (unlike vacuum tubes). All Nixie tubes are actually cold cathode lamps, but they are closer to neon lights than CCFLs, which you are probably thinking of.
