it just takes lots of reading practice to get the hang of kanji and being able to recognize it. it helps to have a teacher or a fluent japanese speaker to explain the kanji's meaning, but reading is the best way. A change of a stroke can change the entire meaning, so be careful.

@PerfektFlawz My previous comments was based on another person's comment who claims to "know" Japanese adults... and stereotyping as such. So I'm not sure why you've responded with a history lesson on anime culture... Also I grew up in the US as you described, but I did not refer myself as "otaku...
