'Philosophy provides man with a comprehensive view of life.In order to evaluate it properly, ask yourself what a given theory,if accepted, would do to a human life, starting with your own'--Ayn Rand. The main reason I'm on YouTube is that I enjoy watching music videos and movie trailers and stupid people who like to do stupid things on camera. But I also realize that YouTube is an excellent forum for discussing and debating important issues which should concern everyone--especially issues involving religion and politics, philosophy and science.
We often hear on television,or read in newspapers and magazines or on the internet, that the nation is experiencing a cultural war, that there is a conflict between opposing worldviews(or more accurately, between people with opposing worldviews) in an ideological battle for the mind of the nation.
In reality, minds
are attributes of individual citizens, not nations.
So whose minds are they fighting over? Why yours and mine,of course;and as is true of any war,
the spoils will go to the victor.I don't know about you, but I don't want to become an intellectual or spiritual casualty of some war between atheists and theists, conservatives and liberals, humanists and religious fundamentalists and evangelicals, postmodernists, progressives and traditionalists...Damn,I could go on and on ad nauseum, but I won't, because I might puke all over my computer screen.
The reason I think philosophy is so important, especially metaphysics and epistemology, is that it will give you a powerful intellectual tool to defend yourself from the almost constant intellectual and moral assaults of a culture and its representatives at war with each other and the ordinary citizen.
So,in addition to being on YouTube to entertain myself watching the latest movie previews or music videos,I'm also here to defend an individualist position against all the talking heads and other members of the chattering class who think they know it all. The position I take on a given issue may not be politically or theologically correct, but at least it's the result of my own thinking and not something I espouse because it's popular or trendy or in touch with the so-called mainstream.
Honestly, as far as I'm concerned, the mainstream is out of touch with me....
