The ending is bittersweet. But I agree with you, Kopit.

I still feel like the ending is twisted with the sudden death of Nia. It's feel like it's out of nowhere.

I think Gainax wanted to give a lesson about death and future generation, so they had Nia died in order for Simon to discuss about death.
