I was 17 when I first heard this and it still moves me in the same way now at 43......a very beautiful score composed by a brilliant musician who will be sorely missed....

The reason that the capstan turns in rewind is because the tape is constantly against it which would eventually result in flat areas forming on the capstan shaft. Keeping it rotating causes the wear to be uniform on the shaft.

Had this on one of my 3100's - believe it or not it was the pinch roller not disengaging fully due to seizure of the actuating linkage. I had also had a lot of trouble with stable capstan locking which was caused by partial seizure of the pinch roller bearings. This may help you...

25 years on.....this track was light years ahead of it's time and still is today - a testament to the genius that was and still is Yello.....
