Un scriitor rus, Gorceakov, pleacă pe urmele unui compatriot, un muzician exilat în Italia secolului al XVIII-lea, în scopul scrierii biografiei acestuia. Ajutat de o traducătoare, Eugenia, cu care consumase o poveste de dragoste, el parcurge Italia de nord, de la Roma la Arezzo. Dorul de casă, de Rusia natală macină sufletul lui Gorceakov, paralizându-i orice putere de acţiune, dar şi iniţiativa de întoarcere acasă. Peregrinările lui alternează între o capelă pictată de Piero della Francesca, Roma şi zona piscinei termale a Sfintei Catherina, în care pensionarii hotelului din apropiere vin să se scalde. În acest loc Gorceakov îl descoperă pe Domenico, fost profesor de matematică, un mistic aproape nebun, care meditează la sensul existenţei. Cei doi împărtăşesc convingeri comune asupra tragediei civilizaţiei; în plus, simplitatea sufletească a lui Domenico îi dă curajul de a acţiona. Împrietenindu-se, Domenico îl ajută pe Gorceakov să-şi depăşească nesiguranţa interioară şi îi dezvăluie taina unui ritual expiator.

Prisoner of the Mountains (Russian: Кавказский пленник, Kavkazskiy plennik), also known as Prisoner of the Caucasus, is a 1996 Russian war drama film directed by Sergei Bodrov and written by Bodrov, Arif Aliyev and Boris Giller. The film is based on the Caucasian War-era short story "The Prisoner of the Caucasus" by the classic Russian writer Leo Tolstoy.
Prisoner of the Mountains was awarded a Crystal Globe at the 1996 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, and the same year was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film (Russia) and a Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film (Russia). It also received rave critic reviews. The film is rated R for some violence and language.
This film illustrates the conflicting views between traditional Chechen culture and Russian warfare through the skillful use of soundtrack, costuming, and arms. The personal confrontation between two Russian soldiers and their Chechen captors is the main theme of the film, which was shot in the mountains of Dagestan (mostly in the aul of Ritcha, whose inhabitants are mentioned in the film's credits), a short distance away from the then-ongoing First Chechen War.

The Cuckoo (2002) (English subtitles).
The Cuckoo is a 2002 film directed by Aleksandr Rogozhkin. Its Russian title is Kukushka. It takes place during World War II from the perspective of opposing Russian and Finnish soldiers stranded at a Sami woman's farmhouse.
September of 1944, a few days before Finland went out of the Second World War. A chained to a rock Finnish sniper-kamikadze Veikko managed to set himself free. Ivan, a captain of the Soviet Army, arrested by the Front Secret Police "Smersh", has a narrow escape. They are soldiers of the two enemy armies. A Lapp woman Anni gives a shelter to both of them at her farm. For Anni they are not enemies, but just men.
