About Me:
Let me introduce Ferris "Lil Smokey" Little Light, named after his late father that passed away in 1995 "Smokey Little Light" RIP
Lil Smokey was born in Calgary in November 1990. He was predominantly raised in Calgary, however he lived in Siksika for a short time. Although he was raised in the city, his mother still managed to raise him with the Blackfoot way of life. As a child Lil Smokey was taught many life lessons. One of those life lessons helped him to attain one of his goals in life. The lesson was that everyone walks their own sacred path in life. It is extremely important that you do not interrupt anyone's path, because each person needs to learn life lessons through their own experience.
When he was still young "Lil Smokey" heard his older cousins free styling and rapping. He aspired to be like them. Although he did not take that journey until many hard issues in his life helped him to see the importance of life.
Lil Smokey attended Sacred Heart Elementary, John Paul 2, St. Rose of Lima and ultimately graduated High School from Bishop McNally in 2007. Lil Smokey is very passionate about the ways of his people the Blood and Blackfoot people. Last year he decided to take the knowledge he was raised with and share it with the world, so he worked as an interpreter at Heritage Park Indian Village, and was recently invited back to work another year at the village. This type of employment proved to be very rewarding to Smokey, and he looks forward to future opportunities to work in this capacity.
Lil Smokey has been through some hard issues in his life. Some of which are private and will not be talked about in this article.
He does want to share one thing however, since it will help younger aboriginal youth...
At the age of 16 Lil Smokey ended up in the Young Offenders Centre. In the CYOC guards treated the aboriginal youth like scum. Smokey knows that his people are real warriors and that they lived here in this territory for thousands of years. This knowledge makes it difficult for him to stand by passively when Native people are mistreated. Smokey decided to take that experience and turn it into a song tribute to youth still experiencing issues with law enforcement officers. The best thing that Lil Smokey came away from that experience was that he did not want to be treated like dirt. And, that he wanted to work for younger aboriginal youth. He recently volunteered to work at YMCA Camp Chief Hector with a group of students from Piitoayis Family School and quickly became popular with the group.
Humour and wit are two things that describe this young artist and this has proved to be a successful trait to have. Performing comes easy since Smokey is passionate about his cause. Smokey sings from the heart and this is evident in his music, performing songs that appeal to all types of music lovers. Feedback from other entertainers and local First Nations People has been overwhelmingly positive for Smokey.
Chay Originals contributes significantly to Smokey's music career. Chay himself has become more than a producer to Smokey, he has actually taken Smokey under his wing and become his mentor. Smokey is young, Smokey is impressionable and meeting Chay has proven to be one of the most positive experiences in his life. Chay is a well-known reputable musician. Chay is very humble about his influence in both Toronto and Calgary, however, he is responsible inpart to the success of many big name hip hop artists nation wide.
Smokey has been invited to share his musical talent at many venues in Calgary and has been interviewed by local radio stations.
Smokey is the fastest upcoming aboriginal youth artist in all of Canada.
Smokey welcomes the opportunity to work with youth and is available for workshops and conferences.
