Soul mates meetIn 1999, Ecaterina and Jacob were both searching for a musically inspired soul mate with whom to unfold their creativity and fulfil the visions of their lives. A jam session in Helsingør, Denmark completed their search, and Ecaterina's dream began to come true. "When she played piano and sang some old jazz tunes and folk songs from her native Moldova, I was blown away", Jacob says.
Description of the music
Influenced by a wide range of musical art from around the world - Madonna's melodic power pop, Björk's catchy mysticism, Peter Gabriel's filmic landscapes, Jimi Hendrix's raw nerve, Beethoven's symphonic universes, the wistful soul of Moldovan folk music - and by transpersonal psychologist Stanislav Grof, the Dalai Lama, Lilã has developed their own style: ethnopoprock. The instruments are vocal, electric guitars, sitar, bass, drums, sampled beats, synthesizers and a string quartet. The music makes you feel like dancing, and draws the mind to an inner journey and visionary experiences. It oscillates between lyrical, atmospheric passages and trance-like poprock uplifted by explosive guitar soli...
The philosophy behind Lilã
The name of the band, Lilã (pronounced "leela") is a Sanscrit word that literally means "game" -- the divine game in the manifest world. According to this world view, Creation is an infinitely complex cosmic game created by the Universal Mind. The butterfly, which is Lilã's primary symbol, is the ancient symbol of death and rebirth, and a symbol of the soul.
Album releases
In the summer of 2003 the brilliant international drummer and producer Gary Wallis produced three tracks. The track "Alone" was released by Chromium Records on a compilation CD "Fuel" on 15 March 2004 in the UK. Another track "Apart From You" is on the album Elevation from Matchbox Recordings which was released on 26 April 2004 in the UK. Lilã's first single "Alone" was released in Denmark by the Danish independent label Corona Music. Lilã's first album Spring 2001 was released in Denmark by Axis Mundi Music and GVC Music and Entertainment on 28 February 2005. Spring 2001 explores the mythology of lovers in many variations: from loneliness and astral voyages through enticing sensuality, spring's effervescent optimism and joie de vivre, to Mother Earth, the global village and spiritual mysticism. The album was acclaimed by critics, who wrote: "The CD Spring 2001 is probably one of the most original albums I have heard for a long time. It is one of those releases that pleases with its insistence on its own personality. In my world this CD is a work of art that shows what music can really do when it is allowed to unfold." (Bjarke Nielsen, KultuNaut) Several of the album's songs are played again and again on many local radio stations, and enthusiastic fans have described their concert experiences. Lila's second album - Seven Candles - is very much a rock album. It is produced in collaboration with Gary Wallis. The shaman's drum has been replaced by rock music. The texts treat subjects such as: what to do with bottled-up anger, the encounter with the wild woman / wild man, the shamanic initiatory crisis, ecstasy and spiritual allied animals, the Garden of Eden and the land of childhood.
Lilã 2008
Lilã is an audiovisual symbiosis and live performances are accompanied by films synchronised to the music, containing computer graphics, yantra graphics, starry sky animations, nature footage and short films with actors. After having played with many musicians, the founders of Lilã, Ecaterina and Jacob now play with the warrier Sune Vang Nielsen on bass and the druid Thomas Kær on drums and percussion.
