I've always enjoyed this song and figured it was from the early 19th century. If you Google it however, you read that it was written by a man named Iloyd for a BBC production, with the music coming from an old Welsh hymn!

Well done! I first heard this sung by Steeleye Span, back in the 70's. Their version is on You Tube also, with a different melody.

I LOVE this! I also recommend an album that came out in the 60's featuring poems of Poe set to music - can't remember the title, but the performers were the Ivy League Trio. I believe they took liberties with some of the lyrics, but all haunting songs nevertheless.

Someone asked me (then removed his/her comment) why I stated that these performers were using period instruments, adding that it was visually hard to determine this. The answer is simple. I read in on the liner notes that came with their DVD. :)
