Libretto was formed by Reynold (gtr), Richie (drums) and Ashton (bass) in 1998.It was not long for Mark (gtr), Gavin (vox) and Dollair (synth) to complete the unit.
It was first initiated by Richie and Reynold who share a common interest for Jesus and Mary Chains. They both played with several indie bands together years before Libretto.Ashton went to the same school with Reynold and both hated sports. Music is the only way to kill time in school. Being in a band was some sort of escapism for them.Guitarist, Mark joined Libretto soon after his former band Nocturne disbanded. His low profile nature wins the heart of the guys.
Dollair (synth), who used to be in the same band with Ashton called Curadore, was the perfect candidate to do the keys. A florist by day and a boozer by night Gavin (vox) complete the circle by doing his task as the vocalist.He happens to be the childhood friend to both Reynold and Mark in the late 80s but then disappeared.
The music that the band plays is a result of every individuals preferences. The band itself cannot really describe their music, but some categorize Libretto as post-punk/hardcore. Thus the boys never limited themselves to that genre only. Being great fans of Standstill, The Cure, Mogwai, Blood Brothers and even Bloc Party means that theres no boundaries for them to expand or experiment with the sounds they wanted. Even if people labeled them as post punk/hardcore, there is still a little indie, dance, punk or new wave influence in their music.
Every members of the band is encouraged to experiment with new music. So far the latest release from the band was their 2005 EP, which by far got the critics amazed by the song arrangements and musicianship of the band. Now the band is working twice harder, writing new materials for the upcoming record somewhere next year. Keep the fingers cross. Nevertheless, it is still a long hard road for the band, but one things for sure.that they will keep on playing the music that they love!
