Leo Johnson has worked to alleviate poverty and human suffering in Africa and around the world since he was fifteen years old. Leo was born in Liberia 1983. Although he has only a few memories from his early childhood, he recalls with fondness the feelings of peace, innocence, and the warmth of family that characterized those years.

When he was six, all of that was taken away as he came face to face with one of Africa's most brutal civil wars, human suffering, and death.

Over the years, Leo has formed partnerships and led organizations that have provided education to students from underprivileged communities, lobbied politicians and organizations for youth empowerment and community development, and provided alternative educational support for several underprivileged communities.

In 1998, at the age of fifteen, facing the resurgence of a deadly conflict that had already seized the lives of many of his friends and family, Leo was forced to flee Liberia. As a result, for the following eight years, Leo lived amongst thousands of other Liberian refugees in refugee camps in Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana respectively.

It was in these camps Leo exercised his innate leadership abilities, becoming heavily involved with churches, United Nations High Commission for Refugees, and serving as teachers' assistant and tutor for fellow refugee youth. After eight turbulent years under these circumstances, Leo was resettled to Canada as a Government Sponsored Refugee in 2006.

Leo Johnson is a recipient of J.C. Holland awards for Youth Leadership and Excellence and also a recipient of the Hamilton Spectator Top 40 under 40 awards. He was also a semi finalist on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Canada's Next Great Prime Minister Competition. Leo served as a Guest Lecturer alongside Dr. James Orbinski for the University of Toronto's Global Health Elective Course. In 2008, he was named among the top 75 immigrants in Canada by "The Canadian Magazine." As a Community Activist who leads by example, Leo mobilized a group of 18 refugee youth originally from 13 countries into a soccer team (United FC) that represented Canada at the Arsenal International Soccer Festival in London winning silver medals in the plate competition in July, 2010.

He is the Co -- founder and executive Director of Empowerment Squared and currently working on building the only Library and Community Resource Center in post war Liberia. He is also a fourth year student at McMaster University in the Political Science Program. Furthermore, he is a member of the Hamilton Jobs Prosperity Collaborative, Hamilton Center for Civic Inclusion Governing Council, President's Advisory Committee on Building an Inclusive Community (McMaster University) and a Consultant for Community Development with the African Canadian Network of Hamilton.
