City/Dans: ASHLEIGH LEITE Crawl Space November 1-3, 2007 [Thu-Sat] at 8:30pm Admission: $15.00 (members: $10.00)
In her Danspace Project debut, Stephen Petronio Company alum Ashleigh Leite premieres her dynamic multi-media work, Crawl Space. A sextet of women journey through a world of constriction and captivity punctuated with sound design by Pavel Zustiak, stage design by Denis Gillingwater, and lighting design by Kathy Kaufmann. Staged to juxtapose the vast vertical space of the church, Crawl Space cinematically explores the physicality of performers while closed circuit televisions and video feed lead the viewer through a multidimensional underworld of unsettling voyeurism. The work was created in association with performers Gina Bashour, LoMa Familar, Ashleigh Leite, Tara Lorenzen, Meredith McCanse, and Sandy Tillett.

Ashleigh Leite's choreography triumphantly captures the beauty of an accident or a spontaneous movement. In flawed, she plunges even deeper into her exploration of human imperfection, taking inspiration from a young girl who couldn't stop washing her hands; flawed transforms fear of neurological disorders and strange behaviors into reverence for the physical tics and oddities that make each person unique.

AUTOPSY is a visual dissection of five women. An emotionally charged evening of movement, light and sound, AUTOPSY exposes the metamorphosis from the peripheral to the sincere. While exploring luscious and demanding movement, the performers transform from their history to the present. Through a collage of duets and trios, they interconnect allowing us a peek under the microscope. Only when they disclose their stories do we get the full view, leaving us compelled to evaluate the dichotomies of artifice versus reality. Imbued with a stunning psychological terrain, AUTOPSY plays both ends against the middle.
