It's probably b/c the Germans are so literal, and direct. They don't beat around the bush, and so they don't need idioms to communicate. They are also very "by the book" so that could play into it as well. Lastly, I have heard many non-english speaking people have trouble with America's idioms...

Liza Minnelli talks about alcoholism
circa 2006
@anygoon I guess you don't believe in a genetic basis for homosexuality either then. I think it very likely that she succumbed to alcoholism for the same reason as her mother: personal unhappiness even in the light of great success. Also, perhaps in large part BECAUSE that is what was modeled...

@CapeandCowl I wouldn't call this ducking it: "FTR (for the record), I'm against persecution and murder, not defending oneself or one's country (in certain circumstances). And I'm glad we stopped ALL the Axis powers." Since you ask for 'yes' or 'no', then my answer is YES.

@CapeandCowl Perhaps I phrased it poorly. God is the same, unchanging God, but his method for redeeming people changed considerably from Old to New Testament. Instead of needing the law, which being incredibly nit-picky necessitated a role of Judge, He sent Jesus. BECAUSE he loves us. To me it...

@CapeandCowl You haven't considered the context of the issue or audience Jesus is addressing. Barnes says "...such would be one of the effects of his coming. @CapeandCowl God only sent physical judgement on those who refused to be redeemed. He is a God of love, but not everyone obeys him, and so he must also be a God of judgement. @CapeandCowl God has all roles, Creator and Judge. Like parents he can't always do what's popular but what's best for all. He gives everyone a choice to obey or not. He doesn't reward choosing against him, but he will allow you to do it. When you choose your own idol over God it hurts both God a...

@CapeandCowl I've already explained to you why I disagree with such a label. Also, one of the biggest tenets of Jesus' teachings is forgiveness (70x7). This DEFINITELY goes against human nature, but it is what Christ taught. Do you honestly believe that if EVERYONE tried to follow the teachings...

@CapeandCowl Strictly speaking Christianity is about turning the other cheek, and vengeance being God's. @CapeandCowl I should clarify it's not ALL suffering, but mainly persecution for our beliefs (IMO). Which is why there are Christian martyrs. @CapeandCowl Secular governments are not based on the teachings of Jesus, and have their own prerogatives for war, be it for a "good" or "bad". If an individual disagrees, they can be a pacifist. Many early Christians were. You are right. Suffering in the here and now is not a problem for Christ...
