About Me:
always tell people to never neglect
exercise and proper food choices. You
must never let more than 2 days pass
without doing any kind of exercise and
even just moving around the house. As
to eating, I like to designate one day a
week as what I call a cheat day.
Meaning you can eat whatever you
want one day a week, but the rest of the
week you must watch what you eat.
Health as you know it , is wealth. I will
never accept an excuse that you are
too busy to exercise... Too busy to take
care the most important asset in your
life?? And that is your own BODY. The
good news is that it is never too late to
start any form of exercise even in your
50's . I want to enjoy life beyond the age of 60, the age where most people are beginning to feel the effects of not taking care of their body properly. My main question is why do you have to wait that long before you start taking good care of yourself? It is a choice , I know... I know you want to enjoy life while you are young, I know, I know I have done what a young person has done when young and more... except drugs.. Due to my religious upbringing and my desire to have a good health, I just cannot imagine being involve with drugs... not even cigarettes. Tried one stick when I was 13 years old to follow my friends, because they looked cool doing it and they said it will make you look like a man. After that one stick, it did not click with me. I just could not understand taking in smoke.. I have quite a few relatives die of lung cancer and after 2 years their wives follow them with the same sickness, effects of the now confirmed second hand smoke effect. I try to help friends, relatives and clients achieve their physical goals. Some are more focused than ohers, some just do
not care, and the rest do not hear any
word I say. So be it, it is not my body, I
am not the one that will be visited by
what I call Mister and Misses. Mister
Diabetes, Miss Hypertension, Miss
Athritis, Mister Gout, etc..
I started learning Karate at age 15 and at 17 joined a weightlifting team at my college. Became a candidate for the Philippine Weightlifting team for the Asian Games before graduating with a Degree of Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.
While in college, was recruited to join an Arnis/Eskrima club headed by GrandMaster Atillo. GrandMaster Atillo and I performed an exhibition at the very first Asian Martial Arts and Arnis Festival in the Philippines held at University of San Carlos gym, Cebu City in 1976. Our style is derived from the Balintawak method but coming from Teodoro Saavedra. Over the years, GM Atillo style of Arnis has evolved to a much higher quality due to constant research for a much better way of countering attacks. My motto is: TO BE THE BEST, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE BIGGER, YOU JUST HAVE TO BE BETTER ! Final Note: With none or 10 years or more, experience in any form of martial arts, there is no substitute for good old common sense when you are in the streets. Be aware of what is happenning around you always. We have a saying in Cebu, Philippines: Ayaw pustahi imo piso sa iyang usa ka dako) Meaning: Do not beat your dollar/peso to his one cent) I think 99 % of you knows what it meant. Have a good day and always think on the positive side of life !!! As of July 6, 2010 Grandmaster Atillo and I have parted ways amicably and since then I have formed my own group. I named it Applied Eskrima. I also carry the Saavedra name to HONOR, TEODORO SAAVEDRA who died in the hands of the Japanese during the Second World War . My father also served and fought in that war. I have made some revisions to the system that I have learned which to my knowledge would make the system a lot more practical in real street scenarios. I have also added a lot of drills, the most popular is the Cavada Flow, which Guro Dan Inosanto coined after I showed him the drill last December 22, 2010 in Marina del Rey, CA. After we practiced the drill he asked me what is the name of the drill and I told him, I have no name for it yet and he said why don't we call it the Cavada Flow ! For beginners and serious martial artist around the world who wants to learn my system, please do not hesitate to contact me, but you have to have the desire and the time... in other words act on it, not just talk about it. I promise you, you will learn a lot if you are a beginner and if you have other knowledge of any other martial arts , my system will improved your moves and reflexes dramatically ! Take care everyone ! Master Virgil

Hi Virgil, thanks for all your helpful comments in your left column. I have not been to Cebu for a while but did live there in 2000/2001 before moving to Palawan. You have an interesting channel here. While in Cebu in 2001 I did meet a Frenchman who went to Cebu every year for your type of martial art. He enjoyed it there very much. Take care and God Bless you and your family.
