Hi Everyone, I am a 51 year old guy, and I'm the Church Caretaker and Bellringer at St John's Darlinghurst, Sydney, Australia. I have worked at the Church as Caretaker for 21 years, I have been the Bellringer for 11 years. I was taught by Joan O'Donnell.

I started off just doing Peals and Chimes, then I started ringing some of the Church Hymns on the bells, I can currently do around 150 hymns.

The Tubular Bells were made by Harrington's of Earlsdon, Coventry, England. They were made in 1888 and installed in the St John's Tower in 1889.

I have been doing some research on Harrington's of Coventry. They were originally known as Harris & Harrington. They were later known as Harrington & Latham of Earlsdon, Coventry. They were later known as Harrington & Holland. They were later known as Holland & Holland, but kept the Harrington name for trading purposes.

The bell notes and rope keyboard are as follows: (There are 13 Tubular Bells)

(Left to Right) (Low notes to High notes)

b - c - d - e - F - F# - G - A - Bb - B - C - D - E

I play letters rather than read music from sheets, I can memorise a sequence of letters and not have to look at the reading sheet. When I am doing peals and chimes, I colour code the ropes, this allows easier flow of the chimes, and I can also mingle the sequences as required, I have a number of variations that work quite well.

I only get 10 minutes to ring on a Sunday morning, and a bit more on a Saturday afternoon to do some practise, I have a few more tunes yet to record, then I will be doing some video tours of the Church and the area, also of Wellington, New Zealand where I am from and spend every Christmas.

Would love to swap info, stories, news, pictures and music with other tubular bell churches and even have some sort of online appreciation society for Harrington's Tubular Bells, does anyone have a picture of the first factory in Coventry??

The Harrington company exported sets of Tubular Bells all over the world, the list of includes;
England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Israel, Pakistan, India, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Canada, USA.

If you are from another church and have a set of Tubular Bells in your tower, I would be really pleased to hear from you!!

If you would like a free copy of the Harrington 1897 sales brochure, then email me and I will post you a copy, anywhere in the world.

The St John's church also has an 1885 William Hill Pipe Organ, there are a few clips on this site with Norman Johnston, Bransby Byrne and Ian Griggs playing - all very good Organists!

This is the website for the Organ...

I love the hymn singing. The hymns you've posted are ones we sing in our United Methodist church in Kenmore, NY, USA, regularly. Thanks for sharing the hymns and bell ringing.

Hello from England, thanks for subbing and support. Love the sounds. Just like the English countryside churches back where I was born and raised. Keep it up. God Bless
