Laura Imbruglia. Youve probably seen the name around. Heard a song or two on the radio. You may have even seen her live. Have you been to pub karaoke in Sydney recently? If so, then you probably have seen her live. She does a killer Meatloaf cover.
Lauras been kicking around the Sydney music scene for nigh on 8 years now, has toured Australia countless times and toured Europe twice. Shes played with The Eels, Tegan and Sara, New Pornographers, Fiery Furnaces, Violent Femmes, Beth Orton, Josh Pyke, Bob Evans, redsunband and many more. Some of these bands even watched her sets and said nice things.
Lauras debut e.p. It Makes A Crunchy Noise (2003) introduced the world to her unusual thought processes and awkward confidence (despite a considerable lack of skill on the guitar). She followed it with her self-titled album in 2006, which featured a more expansive sound and a more expansive budget. Shes still paying it off (Ouch). Said album boasted the songs Looking For A Rabbit (Reaching #2 on JTVs chart & winning Bronze medal for Most Innovative Video at the prestigious New York Festivals International Television Broadcasting Awards), Its Getting Worse (which was chosen by MTV to promote their addition to the itunes network) and My Dream of A Magical Washing Machine, which is probably being used for prototype inspiration at Whirlpool HQ right now.
Being a Gemini, Laura is also a bit of a shape-shifter. Originally self-cast as a court jester-ish solo performer, by her debut albums release she had started penning more serious songs with a band behind her. Due for release in early 2010, the 2nd album, sarcastically titled The Lighter Side Of is a meeting of the 2 sides of Laura- The smart-arse and the angry heartbreak-ee. Dwelling into the darkest depths of sadness and heartbreak, Laura occasionally comes up for air to ridicule herself for being so defeatist in the first place. With a healthy taste for country music (Loretta Lynn, The Louvin Bros, Gram Parsons), power-pop (Cheap Trick, The Ramones, The Sweet), 90s rock (Low, Dinosaur Jr, The Posies) and a whole bunch of other stuff, this new offering from Laura is a musical lucky-dip.
Produced by Melbournes Nick Huggins (Whitley, Seagull, Kid Sam) with assistance from Laura & featuring backing from Robbie Avenaim (Phlegm, Wog) on drums and Nick Huggins on bass, this album shows Laura in full flight. The anger is angrier, the funny is funnier, the sadness is sadder.
Careful detail has been put into all aspects, even the art, which will be based on a mini Mad Magazine (at least until she gets sued and has to alter it). Guest artists include Ray Ahn (Hard-Ons), Lluiz Fuzzhound (Midnight Woolf) and Angus Wood. Stay tuned, it will be a sight to behold.
Having taken the good part of a year off to concentrate on writing & recording, she now returns with the preview single off her forthcoming album, When It All Falls Apart (And It Will). This cheery little number is an ode to unrequited love and the desperate state of longing to be the pathetic rebound girl, only to realize that your dreamboat wont even grant you that honour. Featuring blistering guest lead guitar by You Am I's Davey Lane, loneliness has never sounded sweeter and it'll be available to download free from her myspace (www.myspace.com/lauraimbruglia) in October!
