I was born in the river city of Parkersburg West Virginia at the dawn of the space age. My home was with my parents and brother and sisters on our mountaintop home that Pappy called Punkin Knob. My house was filled with music from my earliest memory. Pappy brought Mom home an old up-right piano of dubious tuning and origin, and she would sit and play old gospel and country songs while the whole family gathered around and sang. We would attend church on Sundays, often chauffeured there in one of Pappys old logging trucks, skillfully piloted by my very ladylike mother in her Sunday dress, including heels. I reckon there was my first time on stage with the childrens choir, and I loved it!
When the weather was nice, one of the family friends would bring his bluegrass band up to serenade us all from our big, open front porch. Jim Newberry could play anything and play it well, but mostly he was a fiddler, just like my maternal grandfather. I cant tell you how many times he would play Wabash Cannonball. I got my first guitar lessons from Jim and an appreciation for country music.
Mom had worked for years as the night clerk at a motel, and Pappy had been doing what he needed to get by, but landed a pretty good job operating heavy equipment. My older sisters had moved off to college, so Pappy sold the farm, bought a trailer, and the rest of us started a brand new adventure. Construction families are much like army families, move often. It didnt take long to figure out if I wanted to get along, the best thing I could do was find the biggest, meanest kid I could find and pick a fight so we could get that foolishness over right away.
High Schools, what a trip! I loved football and still do. The trouble was my canary butt couldnt back up my alligator heart. But I played anyway and had a great time. In the mean time, I was spending time running around with my older brother and his friends from the Black Mountain band. These lads played all the local night spots, most of which I really wasnt old enough to get into, but I managed to get in anyway. I began to see what life was like in a rock-and-roll band, and thought it was pretty cool. Later on when I was offered the chance to take the place of the drummer for Little Joe and the Imperials, I jumped at it! We were doing oldies at the time when American Graffiti was tops at the box office.
I got my knee blown out at the end of my junior year so my sports career was over, but at Fort Gay High, we had a community supported radio station (WFGH-FM 88.1) that I had become deeply involved with. I managed to do about any and all jobs imaginable at a radio station. I had some on-air shifts playing DJ. I worked as a news and sports reporter, writer and producer. I used this experience to land a job at KVWG-AM Country in Pearsall Texas during my stay with my Grandparents. I was also in the Choir and the Speech Guild in school, and helped to put together a talent hunt and musical variety show each year.
The United States Air Force was my home for the next four years, and one of my assignments was at Keesler AFB in Boloxi Mississippi where I got the opportunity to be a part of the Keesler Male Chorus under the direction of Capn Jack Moleman (Major, USAF). Jack was an accomplished organist, composer and showman, and my short time with him was invaluable to my later musical career.
