Hundreds gathered at Langara College on January 25th for a public forum on ending child poverty.
The forum, entitled End Child Poverty Now!, was spearheaded by instructor Fran Grunberg from Langara's Social Service Worker program. Eight panelists, ranging from inner-city teachers to policy strategists and charity directors, led the discussion, which addressed the sensitive and immediate issues surrounding child poverty in British Columbia.
MLAs Jenny Kwan (who represents Vancouver -- Mt. Pleasant) and Shane Simpson (who represents Vancouver -- Hastings) were in attendance, along with representatives from the Vancouver School Board and members of several local charities.
The event aimed to address BC's child poverty rate, which has consistently been the worst in Canada for the past eight years. The first panelist to speak was Carrie Gelson, a teacher at Admiral Seymour Elementary School in East Vancouver who garnered a wealth of media attention by writing an open letter about the child poverty crisis to the community last September.

A keynote lecture on "The Scientific Pursuit of Happiness" attracted a crowd of hundreds to Langara College on February 9th, 2012.
The talk, delivered by eminent social psychologist Dr. David G. Myers, addressed factors surrounding our understanding of what it is to be "happy" -- including relationships, religious faith, wealth, gender, and a variety of character traits. More than 350 students and members of the community attended the lecture, which was held in Langara's Newberry Hall.
Dr. Myers, who has written numerous articles and books on the subject of happiness, explored a variety of studies and statistics to address questions including: Who is happy? And why?
The event was organized in partnership between Langara's Psychology Department and Worth Publishers. Jennifer Poole, Department Chair of Psychology at Langara, said the keynote was "an exciting and absorbing presentation of ideas."
Dr. Myers received his Ph.D in psychology from the University of Iowa. He has spent his career at Hope College, Michigan, where he has taught dozens of introductory psychology sections as the John Dirk Werkman Professor of Psychology. Myers's scientific articles have, with support from National Science Foundation grants, appeared in more than two dozen scientific periodicals, including Science, American Scientist, Psychological Science, and American Psychologist. In addition to his scholarly writing and his textbooks for introductory and social psychology, he also digests psychological science for the general public. His writings have appeared in three dozen magazines, from Today's Education to Scientific American. He also has authored five general audience books, including The Pursuit of Happiness and Intuition: Its Powers and Perils.

As part of our 2012 Careers in Science Speakers Series, David Ng, a faculty member at UBC's Michael Smith Laboratories, provides an entertaining re-examination of the scientific method, and why (as boring as it may sound), it is possibly the most important piece of science that you should know. Not only will this contextualize the sorry state of public science literacy, but it will hopefully convince those of us, who are scientifically inclined, that to be vocal in such matters is an important service to society.
