What people never manage to wrap their heads around is that referees have to make these decisions from field level, in real time. There is noone on earth more qualified than referees at this level, and they get many, many more decisions right than wrong. A hard job, being a referee.

@motodome natural human reaction is usually to turn left if you're sitting in the left seat, because in that sense you're turning away from the crash, as the right side of the car absorbs the impact, not the left side which you're sitting in

@truetillspanky except this isn't the case at all. First of all, noone has any idea if it's cocked (or even if it's loaded, though presumably it is), and you have no idea if the safety is off. It's unfair to this policeman (firmly in the 99%) to assume that he did what you described.
